My 2023 Writing Excuse

·

Towards the end of last year, My time at uni came to an end and my writing output dropped significantly. I needed a break from spending every single week concentrating on some assignment or other. That’s the official line. The truth is that without the pressure of a deadline, I struggled to motivate myself. That was fine for a few months, I’d earned a rest, but trying to get back into the swing of things proved tough. Flashforward to January of this year and I had a brainwave. Over the course of 2023 I decided that I was going to do two things:

  1. Every single piece of fiction I read, Film/TV I watched, and video game I played would be recorded in a media list. This wouldn’t help my productivity, but if my studies taught my anything, it’s that it’s important to actively consume art. Creation stagnates in a vacuum, without ideas to help influence it. Plus, I’m the sort of nerd that finds a personal archive cool to look back on.
  2. More importantly for this website, for every game that made it onto my media list, I would write a piece of non-fiction about it. This could take any form, be it a review and opinion piece, or something more creative. So long that it was writing that someone else might enjoy, it was allowed.

This latter decision became my excuse to start writing again. Combining my hobby with writing helped it stopped feeling like such a chore and I started looking forward to sitting down at my laptop. Then, in around April, when I had a few pieces that had been polished, I started to think about this website. My reasoning was that, if I’m going to spend so much time playing and writing about these games, I may as well put them online so people can actually read them.

Well it’s June and I’m finally getting around to putting it all together. I have a few post ready to go which should be uploaded by the time you are reading this: a review of ‘High on Life’ and an opinion piece on the latest Fire Emblem. These were both written at some point over the last six months, so if the tone sounds a little off, that’s why. Going forward I’m hoping to add something at least once every month or so, personal timetable permitting. If you do check them out, I hope you enjoy my ramblings and please keep an eye out for more content from me in the future.

Lots of Love,

Ewan
